Enjoy this joke

Computers can get you in trouble if you don't know how to use them. A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend to thaw out during one particularly icy winter. Because both had jobs, they had difficulty coordinating their travel schedules. It was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday, and his wife would follow him the next day. Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel. There he decided to open his laptop and send his wife an e-mail back in Minneapolis. However, he accidently left off one letter in her address, and sent the e-mail without realizing his error. In Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many years who had been 'called home to glory' following a heart attack. The widow checked her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. Upon reading the first message, she fainted and fell to the floor. The widows son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read: To: My Loving Wife From: Your Departed Husband Subject: I've Arrived! I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. P.S. Sure is hot down here!

Who is the smart guy in our group? Can you answer these questions?

  • How long did the Hundred Years War last?
  • Where does the word “golf” come from?

You can have a look at my webquest

Does this mean you did the Webcast course offered by E-Consultants? Can you share your thoughts/experiences on this?

Vanya's thoughts on Webquest and BAW course

I attended the Webquest 4-week course in March 2005 with the E-consultants (tutors Nicky Hockly and Gavin Dudeney) http://www.theconsultants-e.com/index.asp I had about 10 virtual colleagues, all of us sponsored by PEP http://www.britishcouncil.org/english/pep/index.htm

The course was well structured – it took us from the very easy stuff (sending an e-mail) to the most challenging activity (designing a webquest) For all participants it was the first online course. All of us were entering a Virtual Learning Environment VLE (called Blackboard) for the first time.

Each week we had to do some reading, do some practical tasks and answer some questions based on the reading, then write a reflective journal. Nobody could skip a task, an article or writing their assignment (well, shame on you if you did it). The tutors were very supportive and encouraging. However, we were not supposed to deviate from the topic or ask too many questions not related to the discussed issues. In this respect the Webquest course was like a typical school classroom – teaching, studying and doing homework, assessment. Definately that's good for people who tend to be irresponsible toward their studies or who just try to cope with too many things at one and the same time.(in BAW the atmosphere is slightly more academic. Tutors give suggestions, a million articles to read and links to follow. It’s more or less like a university – you could play hooky and fall in love instead of studying or you could read all night long, discuss issues with like-minded colleagues and do your tasks. BAW sets no limits – when you conquer one thing, another one appears on the horizon; the student could choose what to learn and practice)

The Webquest seminar dealt with the history, types, content of a “traditional” WQ. We developed Treasure Hunts. We didn’t study any html, we were supposed to do our webquests in MWord. My husband is a software programmer and he helped me with the html, all those tags that seemed Greek to me. Last week, in the informal chat session on Sunday, ElizabethH mentioned about templates for webquests. Any links to those?

My summary of the WQ course - it’s a piece of cake to create a webquest of a bad standard; it’s difficult to develop something which works well for your particular students and teaching situation (relevant topics and links, a series of webquests for ESP learning).

On one hand, it’s much better to have more students and tutors – everybody contributes, you always get advice, it’s easier to find a friend in a larger community. On the other hand, in a big community it’s easier to become lazy and to indulge in idleness because there always will be somebody else to perform the task.

In conclusion let me say that the WQ course was a good one - the proof is you like my webquest.

As you can see I couldn’t help comparing my two online courses - both were beneficial to me. I could only add that BAW is more intensive. The content of each week of the BAW course equals a course like the WQ course.

Hello Vanya, This is from Cheryl. Here is a link to many webquests, templates and a Webquest Conference in Barcelona information from 10/2005. 2/1/06. The link is www.webquests.org

Thank you, Cheryl!

Hi Vanya,

I like both this wiki and your webquest. Nice information about the course you took last year. I also think this course upgrades all previous courses on using the Internet at EFL. First of all because it is so well planned in advance and the leaders are excellent. Also the atmosphere makes you feel free to learn as much as you want to and not feel under the pressure of new assignments. For people who work or people who need an injection of enthusiasm with open horizons ahead, this is the course.
